Little & Lion

Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert

When Suzette comes home to Los Angeles from her boarding school in New England, she isn’t sure if she’ll ever want to go back. L.A. is where her friends and family are (along with her crush, Emil). And her stepbrother, Lionel, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, needs her emotional support.

But as she settles into her old life, Suzette finds herself falling for someone new…the same girl her brother is in love with. When Lionel’s disorder spirals out of control, Suzette is forced to confront her past mistakes and find a way to help her brother before he hurts himself–or worse.

I had seen this book around book twitter for awhile and people had been raving about it. Then one day, I was looking around at my library and saw it. I picked it up and decided to read it and let me tell you that was one of the best book decisions I’ve made in awhile.

First, I’ve said this time and time again, but I love a good family dynamic in YA, especially when the family is used as a part of the plot. Too often, YA just ignores the family, but thankfully this book didn’t. Suzette’s mom was a person that she could go to and talk when the other characters were too involved. I loved reading about her relationship with her “stepdad”. And obviously Lionel was a huge part of the story seeing that his nickname is half of the title.

WE HAD SO MANY QUEER GIRLS I CRY. Okay, another thing that I loved and should be more popular is a diverse cast. Little and Lion had a ton of queer characters: main and side, characters of color: main and side, and there were also characters will varying religions. This book felt so real because of the characters. The real world is this diverse and I loved reading at all times.

Lastly, so I don’t rant on for years, the thing that I love about this book is the Suzette figuring out her sexuality wasn’t all that she was. She was a sister and friend, but also a girl figuring out who she likes. It’s an underlying, but relevant, part of her story. But it wasn’t all that she had to offer. More books need to take a page from this book and how it handles sexuality.

Overall, read this book. Please. It is so good. The mental illness rep is spectacular and so is the queer rep. Trust me, you will love this book just as much as I did. 5/5 stars

I am having so much fun collaborating with Kayleen each week on these posts. Stay tuned to both of our blogs next week to see what is coming up next.
